A man was killed and five others were injured after a speeding private car skidded off the Chattogram Elevated Expressway and fell onto the road below in Nimtala Bishwa Road area of the city on Thursday.
The deceased, Md Shafiq, 55, a resident of Fakirhat Gosaldanga Ward 36 and an outsourced worker at the port, was riding a bicycle when the vehicle fell, killing him on the spot.
Eyewitnesses said the car was heading toward Lalkhan Bazar from the sea beach area at high speed when the driver lost control. The vehicle skidded off the expressway around 4:30pm and fell onto the road, leaving all five passengers injured.
Mostafa Ahmad, officer-in-charge of Port Police Station, said the car was coming from Patenga and fell near the Nimtala intersection, opposite Barik Building.
Shafiq’s body has been kept at Chattogram Maa O Shishu Hospital. The injured, including a young woman, were taken to Islami Bank Hospital, with one reported to be in critical condition.
The crash caused significant traffic congestion on key roads leading to Chattogram Port. Police are investigating how the vehicle breached the expressway barrier.
According to the Fire Service, local residents acted promptly, rescuing the injured from the overturned vehicle and taking them to nearby hospitals before firefighters arrived.
