A 40-year-old man was killed after being crushed between two buses in the capital’s Chankharpul area on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Joydeb, a distributor for a pharmaceutical company named Royal Laboratories.
The accident occurred at approximately 4pm on the road between Chankharpul and the new building of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
According to a pedestrian, Md Musa Gazi, Joydeb was attempting to board a Narayanganj-bound Moumita Paribahan bus when a Thikana Paribahan bus, while attempting to overtake, crushed him against the first vehicle.
Witnesses and pedestrians rushed a critically injured Joydeb to the DMCH emergency department, where attending doctors pronounced him dead at 4:30pm. Local residents have reportedly detained both buses involved in the incident.
Mizanur Rahman, a colleague of the deceased, said they had been working in the Shahbagh area since morning. Joydeb, whose ancestral home is in Barishal district, lived in the Jatrabari area and was reportedly on his way home when the tragedy struck.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed the death and said the body has been kept in the hospital morgue for an autopsy. He added that Shahbagh Police Station has been notified to investigate the incident.
