A 40-year-old man was killed in a mass beating on suspicion of cattle theft in Volahat Upazila of Chapainawabganj in the early hours of Tuesday.
The deceased, identified as Firoz Ali, was the son of the late Nur Nabi from the PTI Basti area of Chapainawabganj municipality. He had been living at his father-in-law’s house in Gohalbari village for the last five years.
According to police and local sources, the incident took place at approximately 3:00 am at the residence of Md. Emran Hossain (57) in Gohalbari village.
A group of thieves allegedly attempted to steal cattle from Hossain’s cowshed. When the household members realised what was happening and began shouting, locals gathered and caught Firoz Ali red-handed, while others managed to flee.
An angry mob then severely beat Firoz, leaving him critically injured. He was subsequently rescued and rushed to the Volahat Upazila Health Complex for medical treatment.
However, the attending physician pronounced him dead at around 7:15 am while he was undergoing care.
Upon being notified, Volahat police recovered the body from the hospital and made arrangements to send it to the morgue for an autopsy.
ANM Wasim Firoz, Additional Superintendent of Police in Chapainawabganj, stated that the individual died following a mass beating by villagers after he and several others were caught attempting to steal cattle.
The victim’s mother, Mosammat Ferdousi, has filed a case naming 15 to 16 individuals as accused in connection with the incident. Police have already detained three people for questioning.
