Rumours of 3 Idiots returning to cinemas have been dismissed by its producers, who say reports claiming the film will be re-released on 4 September are false.
According to Hindustan Times, speculation spread across social media after reports suggested the 2009 blockbuster starring Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi would return to theatres on Teachers’ Day. The claims gained further attention amid ongoing student protests and renewed discussion over whether the film was inspired by education reformer Sonam Wangchuk.
Responding to the reports, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films issued a statement on Instagram denying any plans for a theatrical re-release.
“With reference to recent media reports claiming that 3 Idiots will be re-released on 4th September, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films would like to clarify that these reports are false and factually incorrect,” the production house said.
It also urged both fans and the media to rely only on announcements made through its verified official channels.
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, 3 Idiots released in 2009 to widespread critical and commercial success. The film explored flaws in India’s education system and starred Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani and Mona Singh.
The speculation also resurfaced shortly after Aamir Khan addressed the long-standing belief that the film’s central character was based on education activist Sonam Wangchuk.
Speaking at the London Indian Film Festival, the actor said the claim was incorrect.
“No, that is not true actually. That is a misconception. I didn’t know about Mr Sonam at that time when we were doing the film, 3 Idiots. I saw a video of Chatur just recently, and he said that. But he is wrong,” Aamir said.
He added that neither director Rajkumar Hirani nor writer Abhijat Joshi knew Wangchuk while making the film.
“However, what Mr Sonam is doing is good work in any case. He doesn’t have to be based on a character of 3 Idiots for us to respect him and the work that he does. I wanted to share this from a factual point of view,” he said.
