A Dhaka court has ordered the main accused in the abduction of a tenth-grade schoolgirl from Uttara to be sent to jail, as police sought a five-day remand for interrogation.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan issued the order on Saturday evening following a hearing, confirmed Sub-Inspector Tahmina Akter of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Division.
The abducted victim is currently undergoing treatment. Her statement under Section 22 will be recorded on the scheduled date of 4 May, when the court will also hear the remand application.
Earlier, investigation officer Sub-Inspector Fariduzzaman of Uttara East Police Station produced accused Lamin Islam (19) in court and applied for a five-day remand.
The remand application stated that preliminary investigation has found sufficient evidence of the accused’s direct involvement in the incident, which has created a terrifying situation among school-going girls in the area.
It argued that interrogation on remand is necessary to collect information about other absconding accused, gather details of the motorcycle and private car used in the abduction, and uncover the mystery of the incident.
On 1 May at noon, police arrested the main accused from an area under Gazipur’s Pubaile Police Station and simultaneously rescued the abducted student, Jerin Zaman Tuba. The accused’s home is in the Rayerdia Ulukhola area under Kaliakoir Police Station in Gazipur.
According to the case complaint, the victim is a tenth-grade student of Uttara Girls’ School. On 22 April, around 2:30 pm, while returning home with her father after exams, when they reached Sector-6 under Uttara East Police Station, Lamin Islam and his accomplices forcibly put her into a private car and abducted her.
The victim’s father, Md Kamruzzaman, filed the abduction case at Uttara East Police Station.
