A magnitude-5.0 earthquake struck China’s Tibet region late on August 27, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said.
The quake occurred at a depth of 10km in northern Tibet, GFZ said, reports Reuters.
The epicentre was hundreds of miles north of areas of Nepal and China that were hit by devastating flash floods on August 26. The floods killed 469 people and left around 1,400 missing.
China’s Earthquake Networks Centre also reported a magnitude-4.7 earthquake in Nagqu, Tibet, on August 26, state-run Xinhua news agency said.
China has activated a Level-IV flood response in Tibet amid the risk of a barrier lake breach, Xinhua added.
China’s Ministry of Water Resources has instructed local authorities to monitor the barrier lake and rainfall and sent an expert team to Gyirong county, according to Xinhua.
