Cyclone Arnab made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast early on Wednesday, with the process taking more than six hours.
Five people died in separate cyclone-related incidents across Vizag, Anakapalle, Kakinada, Konaseema and West Godavari, reports NDTV.
Some victims suffered electrocution, while others were struck by falling trees.
The cyclone brought heavy rainfall to several districts in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 1,80,000 people ahead of its arrival.
In neighboring Odisha state, officials planned to evacuate about 48,000 people from areas likely to be affected by the storm.
