The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has extended the deadline for installing manual registration number plates on the front of motorcycles by 45 days, setting the new deadline for 31 December 2026.
The authority announced the extension in a statement posted on its official Facebook page on Thursday.
The previous deadline was 15 November, as announced in an emergency public notice issued on 16 October.
Under the directive, motorcycle owners must install front number plates themselves, following the dimensions and design prescribed by the BRTA.
Earlier, the authority made displaying registration numbers on both the front and rear of motorcycles mandatory.
According to the BRTA, the requirement is in line with the Road Transport Act, 2018, and the Road Transport Rules, 2022. The rules provide for approved, high-quality retro-reflective metal number plates with radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology at the rear of motorcycles. Registration numbers must now also be displayed at the front.
The BRTA has set different dimensions for front number plates based on motorcycle type.
For scooters, the plate must be 200mm long and 100mm wide, with letters and numerals at least 20mm high.
For other motorcycles, the plate must be 285mm long and 50mm wide, with letters and numerals also at least 20mm high.
The registration number on motorcycles other than scooters may be displayed on a single horizontal line.
