Five members of the same family suffered burn injuries in a fire triggered by a gas cylinder leak in the Kashimpur area of Gazipur on Thursday morning.
The victims are currently undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
The incident took place at around 8:30am in a rented tin-shed house in the Sardaganj area of Kashimpur.
The injured have been identified as Riazul Sheikh, 40, his wife Arifa Begum, 30, their daughter Faria Akter, 17, daughter-in-law Rozina Akter, 18, and Rozina’s one-year-old son, Abdur Rahim.
According to Md Akash, son of the injured Riazul, a woman living in an adjacent room locked her door and left for work in the morning. Shortly afterwards, a smell of gas was detected coming from that room.
Akash said that the family contacted the tenant and opened the door while all family members were standing beside it.
When someone attempted to switch on the light after opening the door, a fire broke out with a loud explosion, burning all five members of the family.
National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery Residential Surgeon Dr Sultan Mahmud Shikder confirmed that Riazul sustained 40 per cent burn injuries, Arifa 5 per cent, Faria 8 per cent, Rozina 1 per cent, and one-year-old Rahim 1 per cent.
