Police have rescued gold trader Pintu Das and three members of his family from Patiya in Chattogram after they allegedly went into hiding following their failure to return mortgaged gold to customers.
Pintu Das is the owner of SK Shilpalay, a jewellery shop in Chandpur town.
A special team from Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station rescued them from Pintu’s native area in Patiya upazila of Chattogram at around 5am on Friday. Sub-Inspector (SI) Kalam Gazi, who led the operation, confirmed the matter.
According to police and local sources, a report titled “Gold trader Pintu and four family members missing” was published on 26 August. Following the report, police contacted neighbours of Pintu’s residence and his jewellery shop.
During the inquiry, police learned that Pintu had allegedly gone into hiding with his family members after failing to repay money taken from customers against mortgaged gold.
Police said they became concerned over the disappearance of the four people from Chandpur, particularly following the recent murder of four members of a family in Rangpur. Later, the Chandpur District Detective Branch (DB) and Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station launched a joint operation to rescue them.
Using information technology, police traced their location after a two-day search and rescued Pintu Das and his family members from Patiya.
Meanwhile, several people have filed complaints with Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station against Pintu Das over allegations that he failed to return their mortgaged gold.
Pintu had been living in a rented flat at Soura Villa on Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury Road in Chandpur town. Russell Khan, son of the house owner, filed a General Diary (GD) with the police station on 22 August regarding Pintu’s disappearance.
Foyez Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station, said, “After reports emerged that gold trader Pintu Das was missing, police began a rescue operation. Through the use of information technology and a special police operation, Pintu Das and three members of his family were rescued from Patiya in Chattogram. They are now being brought to Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station.”
Police said details regarding the reasons behind their disappearance and the complaints related to the mortgaged gold would be disclosed after completion of the legal procedures.
