A minor verbal altercation took a deadly turn in Aditmari upazila on Monday night, resulting in the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old madrasa student.
The victim, identified as Liakat Ali Laden, was the son of Ashraful from Balatari village in Sarpukur union.
According to law enforcement and local accounts, the tragedy originated from a dispute between Liakat and a local youth named Rabbi.
The conflict reportedly began when Rabbi, the son of Jewel from neighboring Daspara village, insulted Liakat by labeling him a drug addict during a petty argument.
Witnesses said an enraged Liakat responded by slapping Rabbi. Local residents later intervened and managed to mediate the situation, easing the tension at the time.
The incident occurred around 8pm while Liakat was sitting by himself on the grounds of Sarpukur Government Primary School. Police reports indicate that Rocky, Rabbi’s older brother, allegedly stabbed Liakat from behind, before fleeing the scene.
Liakat was rushed to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital, where doctors on duty declared him dead upon arrival.
The news of the student’s death sparked violent protests in the locality, with an angry mob attacking and vandalising the house of the accused. Police reinforcements later arrived and brought the situation under control, while the victim’s body was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Haque of the Aditmari Police Station confirmed that the suspect fled the area immediately following the attack and remains at large.
The OC said efforts are underway to arrest those involved, adding that the victim’s family is preparing to file a formal case.
