The murder case of Jobayed Hossain, a student of Jagannath University (JnU) and a member of the university unit’s Chhatra Dal convening committee, is ready for trial, and has been transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter passed the transfer order on Wednesday. The court has fixed 13 September as the date for hearing on framing of charges, according to SI Kamal Hossain of the Prosecution Department.
According to case documents, Jobayed was murdered on 19 October last year in Old Dhaka’s Armanitola while attending a private tuition session.
He had gone to the residence of his student, Barjis Shabnam Barsha, at Roushan Villa on Nur Box Lane at approximately 4:30pm. His blood-stained body was later discovered on the stairs of the building’s third floor.
The victim’s elder brother, Enayet Hossain Saikat, filed the murder case at Bangshal Police Station on 21 October, two days after the incident. Following the investigation, Investigating Officer Md Ashraf Hossain submitted the charge sheet to the court on 30 June.
The chargesheet names three individuals as accused: Jobayed’s student Barjis Shabnam Barsha, her lover Md Mahir Rahman, and Mahir’s friend Fardin Ahmed Aylan. All three suspects are currently in custody.
The investigation report indicated that the murder was the result of a “love triangle” involving the accused.
On the day of the occurrence, Jobayed reached the residence at 4:30 pm. At 5:48 pm, Barsha sent a message via Messenger to Saikat, a university junior of Jobayed, claiming that unidentified persons had killed him.
Later, at around 7pm, another JnU student, Md Kamrul Hasan, telephoned Jobayed’s brother, Enayet, to inform him of the situation. Enayet, accompanied by his brother-in-law Sharif Mohammad, reached the scene at 8:30pm.
They observed bloodstains on the walls and stairs before discovering Jobayed’s body lying on the third-floor landing.
All three accused – Barsha, Mahir, and Aylan – are currently in jail as the legal proceedings move forward
