A newlywed couple has died in Saghata upazila of Gaibandha district within two days of their wedding after consuming toxic rat-killing gas tablets.
The husband, Md Alamin, passed away at around 11:30am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Gaibandha General Hospital, one day after his wife, Tanisha Begum, died. The tragic deaths have cast a pall of gloom over the area.
According to local sources, Alamin, son of Azadul Islam from the Bonarpara College Mor area of Saghata upazila, first met Tanisha Begum from the Banglabazar area of the same upazila over a mobile phone call. Following a four-year romantic relationship, the couple got married on Monday against their families’ wishes. However, neither family accepted the marriage.
Distressed by the family disapproval and discontent among relatives, the couple suffered an emotional breakdown and subsequently consumed toxic rat-killing gas tablets together. As they fell critically ill, efforts were made to transport them to hospital.
Tanisha died on the way to Gaibandha General Hospital. Alamin was admitted in critical condition; however, relatives allegedly deserted him at the hospital after completing his admission. He succumbed to his illness during treatment on Tuesday morning.
The officer-in-charge (OC) of Saghata Police Station said that upon receiving information regarding the incident, police recovered the youth’s body and sent it to the morgue at Gaibandha General Hospital for an autopsy.
The officer added that the entire incident is being thoroughly investigated and appropriate legal action is being taken, noting that no formal complaint has been lodged at the police station by the relatives of the deceased so far.
