Former India captain Rohit Sharma’s ODI career could be nearing its end, with the third and final ODI between India and England at Lord’s on July 19 potentially marking his last appearance in the format, according to The Indian Express.
The report said India’s senior selection committee has informed Sharma, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, that it plans to move forward without him after the England series. The selectors are reportedly keen to give opportunities to younger players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and are not considering Sharma as part of their plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court to decide his future,” a BCCI source told The Indian Express*
It is also understood that Rohit held discussions with several BCCI officials during the England tour and was unhappy with the decision.
Rohit has enjoyed a successful tenure as India’s ODI captain, guiding the team to the 2023 World Cup final. His aggressive approach at the top of the order helped reshape India’s batting strategy in the format. That attacking template continued into the 2024 T20 World Cup, where India lifted the title under his leadership.
However, with the selectors reportedly looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup, Sharma’s future in the 50-over format remains uncertain.
