Liverpool’s disastrous season plunged to new depths as PSV Eindhoven stormed to a 4–1 victory at Anfield on Wednesday, inflicting yet another heavy Champions League defeat on Arne Slot’s troubled side.
The night had started badly for Liverpool when Virgil van Dijk handled a sixth-minute corner, allowing Ivan Perisic to convert from the spot.
Dominik Szoboszlai levelled ten minutes later, turning in a rebound after Cody Gakpo’s effort was saved, but the equaliser provided no real spark.
PSV took control after the break.
Guus Til restored the visitors’ lead on 56 minutes, racing on to Mauro Junior’s superb pass and finishing clinically.
Liverpool wasted chances — most notably when Gakpo headed over from close range — and they were punished again when Ibrahima Konaté gifted possession inside his own half.
Ricardo Pepi struck the post, leaving Couhaib Driouech to tap in the rebound.
Driouech struck again in stoppage time after Sergiño Dest was allowed to burst clear and square across goal.
The 4–1 defeat marks Liverpool’s ninth loss in twelve matches across all competitions — their bleakest run since the 1953–54 season.
They have now lost three consecutive games, conceding ten goals in that spell, and sit 12th in the Premier League, their lowest position for over a decade.
It was also Liverpool’s first home defeat in the Champions League opening phase in five years, leaving them 13th in the league standings, where only the top eight qualify automatically for the last 16.
Slot admitted earlier this week that he felt “guilty” over the team’s collapse, but the problems continue to mount.
Alexander Isak, left on the bench after another goalless outing, could not influence the game when introduced, and the sight of empty seats before the final whistle underlined the growing frustration among supporters.
Liverpool’s shortcomings were clear throughout — a lack of intensity, repeated defeats in individual duels, and an inability to break down PSV’s low block, while being exposed time and again on the counter-attack.
The Reds next travel to West Ham on Sunday, searching desperately for answers in a season spiralling out of control.
