Police have recovered a large number of bamboo sticks and batons from a house in Sobhanighat area of Sylhet city.
The items were seized on Tuesday night during a raid at a residence in Mauban residential area.
Kotwali Police Station’s Officer‑in‑charge (OC) Mainul Zakir said, “Acting on a tip-off, we raided the house and recovered a huge quantity of batons and other equipment for use in clashes, which had been left abandoned.
He said, “The matter is under investigation. We primarily suspected that the items were stockpiled with the intention of possible conflict and violence on the election day.”
Police did not provide clear information about whose house the sticks and batons were recovered from. OC Mainul said that no one has yet been detained in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, Rezaul Hasan Qayes Lodi, acting president of Sylhet city BNP and chief election coordinator of Sylhet-1 BNP candidate Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir, alleged that rival candidates might have prepared such stockpiles to sabotage the election.
He demanded a proper investigation and necessary action.
