Lamine Yamal has given Spain fans another reason to talk about the World Cup. The Barcelona winger said he will grow a beard and moustache for three weeks if Spain lift the trophy in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The 18-year-old made the promise during a fan Q&A on his YouTube channel.
Yamal has built his image around a clean-shaven look since breaking into professional football. His latest pledge quickly spread across social media as Spain prepare for their opening group-stage match.
The promise arrived during a difficult period for the teenager. Yamal has spent recent weeks recovering from hamstring and groin problems that ruled him out of Spain’s final warm-up fixtures before the tournament.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has received encouraging news on the winger’s recovery. De la Fuente said Yamal remains on course for Spain’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde on 15 June.
Spain enter the tournament among the favourites after winning UEFA Euro 2024 and the UEFA Nations League. Much of that optimism centres on Yamal, who has become one of the most influential young players in world football.
The teenager enjoyed another outstanding season with FC Barcelona. He helped the club secure a domestic double and collected individual recognition, including La Liga’s Player of the Season award.
Yamal has never hidden his ambition. In a recent FIFA interview, he spoke openly about his desire to shine on football’s biggest stage and help Spain challenge for the title.
For now, Spain’s coaching staff care more about his fitness than his facial hair. If Yamal returns in time and Spain make a deep run in North America, supporters may get both. A World Cup trophy and a very different look from one of the game’s brightest young stars.
