Miscreants set fire to Lakshmipur district election office after pouring petrol early Saturday. Important documents stored on the ground floor were burned in the incident.
District Returning Officer SM Mehedi Hasan and District Election Officer Md Abdur Rashid confirmed the arson attack.
According to witnesses and election office sources, the attackers broke the glass window of the ground floor, poured petrol inside, and torched it around 3:30am. When the office’s night guard noticed the blaze and raised an alarm, the perpetrators fled.
Election staff later informed the fire service, but the flames had already been extinguished before their arrival.
District officials, including the deputy commissioner, police, and election office, visited the site shortly after the incident.
Election Officer Rashid said some documents were damaged, but major losses were prevented as the fire was detected quickly.
He added that investigations are underway and legal action will be taken.
