Khulna University (KU) has formed a five-member committee to find out whether any of its teachers were involved in an alleged secret effort to bring former prime minister Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh.
The university announced the decision in an office order signed by Acting Registrar Prof SM Mahbubur Rahman on Monday.
KU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Harunur Rashid Khan confirmed the formation of the committee.
The move follows reports in various media outlets and other sources claiming that 404 teachers from 22 public universities were involved in an alleged secret initiative to facilitate Hasina’s return.
The university said the committee was formed to establish whether any KU teacher was involved in such an activity.
Prof Md Ashraful Alam, dean of the School of Science, Engineering and Technology, has been appointed chairman of the committee, while Prof Md Salahuddin, director of Student Affairs, will serve as member-secretary.
The other members are Prof Md Abdul Jabbar, dean of the School of Education; Prof Md Nasif Ahsan, dean of the School of Law; and Prof Sheikh Sharafat Hossain, dean of the School of Social Sciences.
The committee has been asked to complete its investigation within a month and submit a detailed report to the university authorities.
The university order did not identify any KU teacher as having been involved in the alleged initiative.
