The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulshi Police Station in Chattogram has been removed following the assault and harassment of national team cricketer Nayeem Hasan, police officials said on Saturday night.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasan Md Shawkat Ali issued the order removing OC Arifur Rahman and attaching him to police lines. Baklia Police Station OC Mohammad Solaiman has been posted to Khulshi Police Station in his place.
Additionally, CT SB Inspector Md Zahedul Kabir has been given charge as the new OC of Baklia Police Station. The order, issued in the public interest, took effect immediately.
According to police sources, Nayeem Hasan returned to Chattogram on Friday night after playing a Premier League match in Dhaka. While heading home from the airport by CNG auto-rickshaw, police stopped him in the Lalkhan Bazar area.
There, Khulshi Police Station Sub-Inspector Shafiqul Islam and police source Sohail allegedly beat the cricketer with sticks and pipes. He was then taken to the police station and harassed a second time. He was released following the intervention of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials.
A three-member investigation committee has been formed to probe the incident, headed by CMP Deputy Commissioner (West) Md Alamgir Hossain.
The CMP Commissioner said if any involvement of the OC is found in the investigation, strict action, including a departmental case, will be taken against him. The committee has been asked to submit its report swiftly.
CMP sources confirmed that two police personnel accused in the incident have already been temporarily suspended and one has been removed. The CMP authorities have also discussed the matter with BCB President Tamim Iqbal.
