Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, a member of the BNP Standing Committee and lawmaker for Cumilla-1, has demanded in Parliament that the proposed new division be named “Cumilla.”
Speaking on a matter of urgent public importance during a parliamentary session on Monday, the veteran politician noted that Cumilla is a highly historic district with significant importance in terms of education, literacy, and culture.
He stated that there has been long-standing speculation regarding the establishment of a division in Cumilla and, therefore, requested that it be officially named after the district. The session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal.
During his address, Mosharraf criticised the previous autocratic regime, noting that while they had announced the formation of a division, they refused to name it “Cumilla.” He explained that the previous administration had argued against the name because of certain individuals born there and the claim that the syllable “Ku” is derogatory.
He further highlighted that the people of Cumilla, transcending political affiliations, had protested against these decisions. Although the previous government eventually promised to provide a solution, they failed to implement one before leaving office.
Records show that during the Awami League’s tenure, proposals were adopted to name the division “Maynamati” in 2017 and “Meghna” in 2022. Mosharraf urged the Parliament to finally realise the demand of the local population by officially establishing the ‘Cumilla’ division.
