Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan has said the university will seriously consider proposals for academic research, literary work and institutional initiatives on the life and work of former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
He made the remarks on Sunday while speaking as the chair at a condolence meeting organised in memory of Khaleda Zia at the Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building of the university, according to a press release issued by the university’s public relations office.
The vice-chancellor said Khaleda Zia was a rare symbol of national unity. Rising from a homemaker to a stateswoman, she was able to unite the people of the country through her multidimensional contributions.
He added, “The spontaneous participation of people from across the country in her funeral prayer is a historic proof of her ability to create unity.”
The condolence meeting began with recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a one-minute silence and a special prayer seeking forgiveness for the departed soul.
A documentary titled “Khaleda Zia in Education and National Unity” was screened at the event. The programme was conducted by Dean of the Faculty of Arts Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan.
Earlier, the condolence book placed outside the auditorium was inaugurated by University Grants Commission Chairman Syed Muhammed Abul Faiz. The condolence book will be kept at the Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom for the next three days for signatures from teachers, students, officers and employees.
Former university vice-chancellor Anwarullah Chowdhury said parliamentary democracy was restored in the country and progress in education was achieved under her leadership.
Economist Mahbub Ullah said Khaleda Zia’s leadership was exceptional in safeguarding Bangladesh’s interests in the international arena, formulating Vision 2030 and taking responsible decisions during times of crisis.
University Alumni Association convener Shamsuzzaman Dudu said Khaleda Zia was a symbol of uncompromising ideological leadership in the struggle to protect democracy, freedom and sovereignty.
