Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been admitted to a hospital in Dhaka on the advice of her doctors.
She was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Bashundhara, Dhaka on Wednesday night, according to BNP’s Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan.
As per the medical board formed for her treatment, Khaleda Zia was taken to the hospital around 11:45 pm on Wednesday for some diagnostic tests. Following the board’s recommendations, she was admitted to the hospital.
Earlier, on August 28, Khaleda Zia had visited the hospital for a regular health check-up.
The BNP Chairperson has been suffering from several long-term health complications, including liver cirrhosis, kidney issues, heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis.
Previously, Khaleda Zia had traveled to London for treatment on July 16, 2017. After being sentenced in a corruption case the following year, she was sent to prison. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Awami League government released her on executive orders. Although she was allowed to stay at home, her repeated requests for permission to travel abroad were denied by the government.
Following the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5 last year due to a student-led mass uprising, Khaleda Zia was released from prison. Five months after her release, on January 8, she traveled to the United Kingdom for advanced medical treatment.
During her stay in London, she received treatment at the London Clinic for 17 days, before being cared for by specialist doctors Patrick Kennedy and Jennifer Cross at her son Tarique Rahman’s residence.
Khaleda Zia returned to Bangladesh on May 6 this year. After her return, she continued her treatment at her residence, under the supervision of Professor Shahabuddin Talukdar, a specialist at Evercare Hospital.
