President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from his post on Friday citing physical illness. Following his resignation, the Speaker of the National Parliament, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, has taken charge as the acting president of Bangladesh in accordance with the constitution.
As the speaker moves to the presidency, Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal will now perform the duties of the speaker of the National Parliament. It was said Kamal had already taken the oath for the speaker’s position at the time of his initial swearing-in as deputy speaker.
Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad announced these developments during an emergency press conference held on Friday at Oath Room of the Parliament. He confirmed that Shahabuddin’s resignation letter had been received and accepted.
Hafiz Uddin said he had taken the oath to serve as acting president on the same day he was sworn in as speaker to prepare for such an eventuality. He added that the deputy speaker had similarly taken the speaker’s oath during his own swearing-in ceremony.
The press conference was attended by Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal, and senior officials from the Parliament Secretariat.
