Kane Williamson has arrived in Bangladesh, when Rajshahi Warriors confirmed on Wednesday morning, to join whom he will play for in the Bangladesh Premier League and why it matters is immediate, with the second qualifier scheduled for later in the day.
The New Zealand batter landed in Dhaka at around 10am and linked up with the Rajshahi squad, ending days of speculation about his participation in the tournament. The rumours had circulated earlier, and on Tuesday Rajshahi captain Najmul Hossain Shanto told a press conference that the former New Zealand captain was set to feature in the BPL.
Williamson’s national team-mate Jimmy Neesham, who is already playing for Rajshahi, is understood to have played a significant role in facilitating the move. Speaking to reporters two days ago, Neesham said he had been in “regular contact” with Williamson as discussions continued.
Williamson last featured in the SA20, turning out for Durban Super Giants. After his side were eliminated on January 17, his availability for the BPL became clearer, paving the way for his arrival in Bangladesh.
If all goes to plan, Williamson is expected to be available for selection on Wednesday evening, when Rajshahi face Sylhet Titans in the second qualifier. Sylhet reached the match by beating Rangpur Riders off the final ball in the Eliminator, while Rajshahi dropped into the second qualifier after losing the first qualifier to Chattogram Royals.
The second qualifier is scheduled to begin at 6pm local time, with the winner advancing to the BPL final.
