Harry Kane says his extraordinary goalscoring form will mean little in the Ballon d’Or race unless he finishes the season with major trophies for Bayern Munich or England.
The 32-year-old is enjoying one of the finest campaigns of his career, scoring 23 goals in 17 matches for Bayern, who remain unbeaten and sit top of both the Bundesliga and their Champions League group. He has added three goals in four appearances for England, including a brace in October’s 5–0 win over Latvia that secured qualification for next year’s World Cup.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Kane downplayed the value of goals without silverware.
“I could score 100 goals this season, but if I don’t win the Champions League or the World Cup, you’re probably not going to win the Ballon d’Or,” he said. “It’s the same with Haaland or any other player — you have to be winning those major trophies.”
Kane believes Bayern’s strong position and England’s recent progress may work in his favour.
“We’re in great shape at Bayern, so that maybe makes the odds a little more in my favour. Same with England. If things go my way for club and country, I’ll definitely be in the conversation for a trophy like the Ballon d’Or.”
Although England have already booked their place at the World Cup, this week’s matches against Serbia and Albania remain key steps in preparation. Defender Marc Guehi has stayed with the squad despite injury, attending meetings and team sessions.
“Representing your country is the biggest honour,” Kane said. “When you’re trying to build a culture and a winning mentality, you need the players there as much as possible. Every moment is important.
“We’re trending in the right direction, on and off the pitch. Marc has had a little injury, but still wanted to be around the group and learn from what we’re trying to do. I think the team is in a really good place going into the new year.”
