After being suspended for two hours due to allegations of vote rigging, voting has resumed in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) elections at Fazilatunnesa Hall.
APBN and ansar members have been deployed at the hall to avoid any untoward incidents.
Earlier in the day, authorities suspended voting at the centre at around 11:30pm after several individuals raised concerns over irregularities in the voting process at the hall.
Following these allegations, the general secretary (GS) candidate from the Shibir-backed panel Mazharul Islam and the Vice President (VP) candidate from the Chhatra Dal panel Sheikh Sadi Hassan arrived at the scene.
When the Chhatra Dal VP candidate entered the voting center, female students expressed their frustration, leading to further tension.
Other candidates also expressed concerns over the entry of the Chhatra Dal candidate into the voting center. Although representatives from the Election Commission arrived at the hall, they did not provide further details regarding the situation.
In a separate incident during the ongoing polls, Hafizur Rahman Sohan, the Central Vice President of the Nationalist Student Party (Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal), was detained at the World Poet Rabindranath Tagore Hall for allegedly occupying the hall unlawfully.
At 11am on Thursday, Sohan was apprehended by the hall provost from room 424. The room was reportedly occupied by Mahbubur Rahman Murad, a member of the Chhatra Dal’s branch committee, who was also found to be unregistered as a student.
Hafizur Rahman Sohan, who was a student of the 36th batch (2006-07) in the English department, has been detained for further questioning.
