The vote counting process for the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election is currently underway.
Till the filing of this report, vote counting has been completed for 17 out of 21 halls. Unofficially, it has been reported that independent candidates are leading the vice-president (VP) and general secretary (GS) positions in five hall unions.
In the election, Jubayer Shabab, an independent candidate, won the VP position at Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall with 151 votes.
Shabab, a student from the Geography and Environmental Science Department, 48th batch, also led in the GS position at the hall, where Shahriya Nazim Riyad, another independent, emerged victorious with 192 votes.
In the Assistant General Secretary (AG) position, Arafat won with 179 votes.
At Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall, Maruf from the Chemistry Department, 49th batch, won the VP position. Although he was involved with the Chhatra Dal, he ran as an independent after not being included in the party’s panel.
In the GS position, independent candidate Md. Masud Rana Mishtu emerged as the winner.
At Hall 10 (formerly Mujib Hall), Asif Mia and Mehdi Hasan won the VP and GS positions, respectively, as independent candidates. Nadeem Mahmood Shibir, known for his ties to the Shibir, won the AG position in this hall.
At Kobi Nazrul Islam Hall, Mohammad Rakibul Islam won the VP position as an independent candidate. Ali Ahmed, an independent candidate who is also affiliated with the Shibir, won the GS position. Labib, who won the AG position, ran as an independent.
In the AFM Kamaluddin Hall, GM Raihan Kabir from the Philosophy Department won the VP position, and Abrar Shahriar won the GS position. Both were independent candidates.
At Al Beruni Hall, Muntasir Khan Orpon won the VP position as an independent candidate.
A total of 11,743 voters participated in the JUCSU election. According to the Election Commission, voter turnout was approximately 67 per cent to 68 per cent. Voting began at 9am on Thursday and continued until 7pm, with vote counting commencing at 10:15pm the same night.
