A Jubo League activist was detained and handed over to police after a procession in Pirojpur town early Friday, according to a press statement.
The detainee, Shamim Sikdar, 38, son of the late Hannan Sikdar of Brahmankathi area under Pirojpur municipality, was chased and caught after the rally ended.
A group of around 30 to 35 people, reportedly backed by former district Chhatra League President Liton Sikdar, brought out the procession under the Jubo League banner in the morning and marched along the town’s main road.
They chanted slogans protesting the ban on Awami League activities during the rally.
On information, district Jubo Dal Convener Maruf Hasan, along with his followers, chased the procession, prompting most participants to flee, while Shamim failed to escape.
He was then detained and handed over to Pirojpur Sadar Police Station by Maruf Hasan.
“Those in the procession were chanting abusive slogans against the current government, BNP and its top leaders and were trying to create sabotage in the town,” said district Jubo Dal Convener Maruf Hasan.
Confirming the detention, Pirojpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mahmud Hasan said legal action would be taken against the detainee.
