Three members of a family suffered critical burn injuries in an explosion caused by a gas leak at their home in Tongi, Gazipur, early Wednesday.
The victims were identified as Lal Chan Mia, 44, his wife Nasima Khatun, 40, and their daughter Tanisha Akter, 16.
The explosion occurred around 6am on the ground floor of a two-storey building near Madrasa Market on Bhadam Road in the Cherag Ali area.
The injured were taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for treatment.
Beauty Akter, the couple’s eldest daughter, said she lived nearby and learned in the morning that an explosion had triggered a fire at her parents’ home. All three family members inside the house suffered burn injuries, she said. She later went to the hospital to see them.
Beauty said the family used both piped Titas Gas and gas cylinders at home. She suspected that gas had leaked and accumulated inside the house before igniting and causing the explosion.
Dr Sultan Mahmud, a resident surgeon at the burn institute’s emergency department, said Lal Chan had suffered burns to 95 per cent of his body, while Nasima and Tanisha had sustained burns to 85 per cent and 86 per cent, respectively.
All three had also suffered respiratory tract burns, and their conditions were critical, the doctor said.
The family’s ancestral home is in Rupsi Kuripara village in Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh. Lal Chan and Nasima work as operators at a local garment factory, while Tanisha is a school student.
