Police have sought a 10-day remand for Diamond World Managing Director Dilip Kumar Agarwala in an attempted murder case involving the shooting of a protester during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in July-August 2024.
The remand petition is scheduled for hearing at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Wednesday, State Counsel Mohammad Shamshuddoha Sumon confirmed.
Uttara West Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Sumon Miah, the investigating officer, submitted the application seeking to interrogate Agarwala over his alleged involvement in the shooting.
According to the remand petition, the complainant joined the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in July 2024. On 5 August that year, protesters came under attack and gunfire near the western side of BNS Centre on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Uttara around noon.
The complainant sustained gunshot wounds to his upper waist and lower spine. Fellow protesters initially took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital before he received further treatment at PG Hospital.
After partially recovering, he filed a complaint with Uttara West Police Station on 26 September 2024.
Agarwala is named as the 31st accused in the case’s first information report (FIR).
The investigating officer claimed that evidence of Agarwala’s direct involvement in the shooting was emerging as the investigation progressed.
Police said custodial interrogation was necessary to establish the circumstances of the attack, identify and arrest other suspects, collect their names and addresses and recover weapons used in the shooting.
In a separate development, a Dhaka court on Tuesday placed Agarwala on a one-day remand in a case involving alleged smuggling and money laundering linked to gold and diamond trading worth approximately Tk678.19 crore.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) sought a three-day remand for questioning in the case filed with Gulshan Police Station.
