Jahangirnagar University (JU) students released 28 Rajdhani Paribahan buses on Wednesday afternoon, about 16 hours after taking control of them in protest against the incident where a female student was pushed off a moving bus.
The buses were released after the owners issued an apology, signed an agreement, and provided Tk30,000 in compensation to the female student. The meeting between Rajdhani Paribahan owners and JU students, held in the presence of Proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam and attended by the victim’s classmates.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when Halima Khatun, a student of the Department of Public Administration, was returning to campus.
The JU Proctor said that the owners acknowledged their fault, issued an apology, signed a written bond pledging respectful treatment of students in the future, and paid Tk30,000 in compensation to the victim.
In a Facebook post after the incident, she wrote that she boarded a Rajdhani Paribahan bus at the Savar Thana bus stand. When she told the staff she was going to Jahangirnagar University, the helper allegedly pushed her off the bus. “The bus had already begun moving, and I fell, injuring my leg,” she said.
In response to the incident, JU students staged a protest by blocking the Dhaka–Aricha highway and taking control of 28 buses that night, turning the movement into a wider demonstration against passenger harassment and student safety on public transport.
