Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have demanded the resignation of Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam following an alleged attempted rape of a female student on campus.
Over a thousand female students took to the streets on Wednesday night, bringing out a torch procession from the residential hall area around 10:10pm. The procession paraded through various campus roads before gathering in front of the proctor’s office.
The protesting students alleged that the proctor’s administration has failed to ensure the safety of female students on campus.
They demanded the proctor’s immediate resignation along with strengthening overall security measures across the university.
Earlier, a case was filed at Ashulia Police Station against an unidentified person over the alleged attempted rape of a female student.
According to the university administration, the incident occurred after 11:00pm on Tuesday in an area adjacent to the abandoned old Fazilatunnesa Hall and the extended section of Al-Beruni Hall.
The university administration has yet to issue an official statement regarding the students’ demands or the incident itself. Further details are awaited.
