Journalist Anis Alamgir has been sent to jail after the end of his remand in an Anti-Terrorism Act case filed with Uttara West Police Station in Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat passed the order on Saturday.
Sub-Inspector of the prosecution division Shamim Hossain confirmed the information.
He said, “After a five-day remand, investigation officer Inspector Kazi Shahnewaz of the Detective Branch of police produced Alamgir before the court and sought his detention in jail.”
The defendant’s lawyer Nazneen Nahar and several other lawyers applied for a division for him in prison.
After the hearing, the court ordered that steps be taken in accordance with jail rules.
Earlier, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police took journalist Anis Alamgir to the DB office after 8pm on 14 December on the pretext of questioning.
Later that night, Arian Ahmed, a member of an organisation called the “July Revolutionary Alliance,” filed a case against Alamgir and three others, accusing them of “conspiring to destabilise the state and inciting a banned organisation”.
The three others accused in the case are actress Meher Afroz Shaon, fashion model Maria Kispotta, and television host Imtu Ratish.
The following day, a five-day remand was granted.
The remand application said Anis Alamgir was taken into police custody and questioned as necessary. During interrogation, important information related to the case was obtained from him, and the information is being verified.
If the authenticity of the information is confirmed during verification, it may be necessary to place him on remand again.
In this situation, the investigating officer prayed for him to be kept in jail.
According to the case statement filed with Uttara West Police Station in Dhaka, Sheikh Hasina left the country as a result of the anti-discrimination student movement.
However, her followers have been lying low within the country in various ways and have been conspiring to commit anti-state crimes with the aim of destabilising the country and destroying state infrastructure.
The complainant further alleged that since August 5 last year, the suspects have used social media and television talk shows to campaign for the revival of a banned organisation and the rehabilitation of the Awami League.
The complainant alleged that at around 8:30 pm on 14 December, Arian Ahmed, while at a house on Road 5, House 5, Sector 11 under Uttara West Police Station, saw on his mobile phone that the accused were attempting to rehabilitate the Awami League through Facebook posts.
It was further alleged that their posts encouraged activists of the banned organisations Chhatra League and Jubo League to engage in conspiracies and terrorist activities aimed at destabilising the state and destroying state infrastructure by committing anti-state crimes.
