Accusing one party of trying to destabilise the country, Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur said that if effective measures are not taken immediately regarding recent incidents, it will lead to a major catastrophe, which might lead to the upcoming national election to be delayed.
He made these remarks while visiting the Prothom Alo office in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka, on Saturday evening.
Nur said, “If the government and law enforcement agencies cannot take effective measures regarding incidents such as the shooting of a young activist like Hadi after the election schedule announcement, attacks on two media offices, and the humiliation of an editor, then it will lead to an even greater catastrophe in the future. A catastrophe that could delay the election, make the election uncertain.”
“If that happens, it will not benefit anyone,” he said.
Stating that it is not possible to stabilise the country without an elected government, Nur said, “This picture of the country 15 months after the mass uprising sends a negative message about the country. It tells the world that the law-and-order system of the nation is fragile. If this continues, we will not be able to move Bangladesh forward.’
Strongly condemning and protesting the attack and fire at the Prothom Alo and Daily Star buildings, he said, ‘This attack is an attack on democracy. Let us not step into anyone’s trap and push the country towards a new crisis. The work of rebuilding the country must be done through elections.’
Mentioning that the entire country’s people have become grief-stricken over the death of Osman Hadi, the Gono Odhikar Parishad president added, “We believe these attacks were planned. These were done to create chaos in the country, to create an unstable situation, to give an opportunity to a third party.”
