The Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) and Hall Students’ Union elections, previously scheduled for 22 December, has been postponed again and will now be held on 30 December.
After being closed for 17 consecutive days due to the fears arising from the recent spate of earthquakes, the university will reopen on Monday for examinations, with regular classes to resume the following day.
A decision to reopen the university was taken during a special syndicate meeting held on Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, JnUCSU Chief Election Commissioner, Professor Dr Mostafa Hasan, confirmed the new date of the elections via an official notice.
In addition to the new date, the notice also states that, in order to ensure a fair and impartial election, a mandatory dope test for the candidates must be completed on 9 and 10 December. Dhaka Medical College Hospital has been given the responsibility to carry out the drug tests.
When asked why the election had been deferred, Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman said that the dope tests could not be completed according to the original schedule due to the aftermath of the earthquake. And without the dope tests, the final candidate list could not be announced.
When asked if the postponement was caused by interference from any person or political group, the commissioner said that no political party, ideology, or individual influence or pressure caused the delay.
Earlier, after the initial earthquake on 21 November, all classes and exams at the university were suspended from 23 November onwards.
Syndicate member Roich Uddin confirmed the decision to resume classes and exams after the special syndicate meeting.
