Jagannath University (JnU) authorities have banned all forms of meetings, rallies and processions inside the campus amid fears of a law and order breakdown.
The decision came after three student organisations announced separate rallies at the same venue and time.
The restriction was announced in a notice signed by JnU Proctor Mohammad Nasir Uddin on Wednesday night.
The notice said three organisations had announced rallies at the same place and time on Thursday. “Considering the law and order situation, all forms of meetings, gatherings and processions inside the university premises have been prohibited until further notice,” it said.
The notice also said all active student organisations of the university had been informed about the decision.
Earlier on 4 August, clashes broke out at Jagannath University during programmes marking July Mass Uprising Day involving several groups, including Chhatra Dal and Shibir. Several students, including a JnU Central Students’ Union (Jnucsu) leader, were injured in the incident. Following the clashes, the university administration strengthened security on the campus.
To maintain control of the situation, the administration had announced additional security measures on the campus on Wednesday and Thursday. As part of those measures, all political programmes inside the campus have now been temporarily banned.
It is learnt that leaders of the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (Jnucsu) had announced a programme on Thursday at the university’s Shaheed Minar premises to donate an ambulance for students.
Later, Chhatra Dal announced a human chain and protest procession at the same venue at 12:30pm, accusing Shibir of terrorist activities, attacks on Chhatra Dal leaders and activists, and mob rule.
