One of Bengali literature’s most celebrated poets and novelists, Jibanananda Das, is returning to the stage through a new theatrical adaptation of his debut novel Malyaban. Theatre troupe Shunya will premiere Sam+Shar, based on the novel, on 16 July at the Studio Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Published posthumously in 1970, Malyaban explores the complex, melancholic and strained marital relationship between Malyaban and his wife Utpala through a deeply psychological lens. Many literary critics believe the novel also reflects aspects of Jibanananda Das’s personal life.
The novel has now been adapted into Sam+Shar. Khandaker Rakibul Haque has edited the script and serves as the director and creative visionary behind the production.
The director said that while the novel largely unfolds from Malyaban’s perspective, the stage adaptation gives equal importance to both husband and wife. He added that the production aims to encourage audiences to reflect on relationships between men and women, responsibility and emotional maturity.
Shahjada Samrat Chowdhury plays the role of Malyaban, while Jagnyashini Mou portrays Utpala.
Following its premiere at 7pm on 16 July, the production will return to the same venue on 17 July with two performances, scheduled for 5pm and 7:30pm.
