Davis also received messages from several other stars. Ricky Gervais, who co-created and starred in the original The Office, left a heart emoji, while director Edgar Wright, who worked with Davis on Shaun of the Dead, wrote: “Love you Lucy. Always. See you very soon.”

Piers Morgan also offered his support, calling the news devastating and praising Davis for speaking openly about her experience.

Davis rose to fame through The Office, where her character Dawn became part of a much-loved will-they-won’t-they storyline with Tim Canterbury, played by Martin Freeman.

The series, created by Gervais and Stephen Merchant, eventually gave the pair a happy ending.

Freeman and Mackenzie Crook recently reflected on Davis’ performance in the BBC special Mackenzie Crook and Martin Freeman Remember… The Office. Crook praised her performance as “beautiful” and “subtle”, while Freeman recalled the Tim and Dawn storyline as “f***ing joyful”.

Davis has said she hopes to continue acting while living with cancer, highlighting the comfort and sense of purpose that work can provide.
