Jamaat-e-Islami has served a show-cause notice on its central working committee member and former Chattogram-14 lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury for making what the party described as “controversial and inappropriate” remarks about the administration.
The notice, signed by Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, was issued on Monday, though the party informed the media on Tuesday evening.
According to the letter, Shahjahan made the remarks during an election coordination meeting at the GEC Convention Hall in Chattogram on Saturday, where he said that elections could not be won “by people alone” and that local administration officials must be brought “under the party’s control” to carry out directives, including arrests and filing cases.
Jamaat said the comments, widely circulated on mainstream and social media, undermined the professionalism and neutrality of the state administration.
The party noted that Shahjahan had previously been cautioned for statements that damaged Jamaat’s image and breached organisational discipline.
His latest remarks, it added, have caused “concern and criticism” in administrative and diplomatic circles.
The party has asked Shahjahan to submit a written explanation within seven days, warning that failure to provide a satisfactory response will result in disciplinary action under Jamaat’s constitution.
