Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed its desire to see the proportional representation (PR) system introduced in the country’s electoral process – even if only for one election, said the party’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher.
He made the remark on Tuesday following a meeting with a high-level delegation from the European Parliament in Dhaka.
Speaking to reporters after the discussion, Taher said the dialogue covered the upcoming national election and the prevailing political landscape in Bangladesh.
“Out of 31 parties that took part in the consensus commission meeting, 26 expressed supports for proportional representation. Some supported PR only for the upper house, while others, including Jamaat, support it for both houses,” he noted.
Taher further stated that it is crucial to change the mindset of political parties that resort to forceful occupation of polling centres to secure power.
Meanwhile, Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman, who also attended the meeting, described the discussion with the European Parliament delegation as productive and constructive.
