Jamaat-e-Islami has urged the Election Commission (EC) to issue a clear and definitive announcement on the schedule for the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
The call came during a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin and other commissioners at the EC headquarters in Agargaon on Monday morning.
After the meeting, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar told reporters that the public is waiting for a specific election date.
“The nation expected the polls to be held before the upcoming Ramadan, as earlier commitments indicated. But as the expected period for announcing the schedule is running out. We came to the Commission to understand its exact position and decision,” he said.
Parwar said the party also raised concerns over polling-centre security, neutrality of field-level administration, ensuring a level playing field, and the need to effectively recover illegal weapons, particularly those looted after 5 August.
He noted that many expatriate Bangladeshis find the voter registration process complicated. The party requested the EC to simplify the procedure to ensure broader participation.
On expectations regarding the upcoming election, Golam Parwar expressed optimism but warned that failing to ensure neutrality would undermine justice for those killed during the July mass uprising. “Their sacrifices must not be devalued,” he said.
The Jamaat leader added that Jamaat is ready to fully cooperate with the EC to facilitate a free, fair, and impartial election.
When a journalist asked whether Jamaat expects to return to power, the leader responded, “If the people give their verdict and Almighty wills, it will happen. We await that day.”
