Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar on Friday said the party has undergone significant changes since 1971 and should not be judged by its role during the Liberation War.
Speaking at a workers’ rally organised by the Cumilla metropolitan unit of the Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation at the town hall ground, he said the party’s constitution has been revised several times in line with changing realities.
Golam Porwar said the current party constitution recognises the sacrifices and contributions of freedom fighters in the Liberation War, reflecting what he described as the party’s evolved stance.
He alleged that some groups continue to keep past controversies alive despite these changes, arguing that such efforts do not reflect patriotism but instead risk creating division within the country.
Calling for national unity, he said resolving longstanding debates is important for the country’s progress and for building a cohesive future for the younger generation.
Quoting the party’s ameer, he added that excessive focus on historical disputes could hinder progress, noting that many countries that gained independence after Bangladesh have advanced further.
Golam Porwar also questioned the relevance of labeling current political figures-many of whom were born after independence-as collaborators of 1971, saying such claims fail to resonate with the public.
