Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, on Friday dismissed reports claiming that its central leader Sadik Kayem has been announced as a mayoral candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation, terming the reports “baseless.”
In a statement issued in the afternoon, Shibir’s central publicity secretary SM Farhad said individuals holding organisational responsibilities within Shibir are not eligible to contest elections or be nominated by any political party while in office.
He added that participation in elections is only possible after formally stepping down from organisational duties and joining a political party in a personal capacity.
Farhad urged the public not to be misled by what he described as inaccurate and confusing reports regarding current office bearers.
Sadiq Kayem currently serves as vice president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) and international affairs secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Earlier in the day, some reports claimed that he had been declared the mayoral candidate for Dhaka South at an event organised by the Jamaat-e-Islami at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Dhaka. Following the reports, Shibir formally rejected the claim.
