Since BNP’s newly elected MPs did not take oath as members of the Constitutional Reform Council, Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance which won 77 seats may have its own swearing-in ceremony halted.
The reason is that if BNP MPs refuse to take oath as members of the reform council, the interim government’s reform process will collapse. In such a situation, Jamaat has declared it will not take any oath at all.
The party’s Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad confirmed this to TIMES of Bangladesh around 11:30am on Tuesday.
He said, “If BNP does not take oath as members of the reform council, we will not take oath either. In a parliament without reform, an oath has no value.”
Meanwhile, the elected MPs of the Jamaat-led alliance have sat for an emergency meeting. The meeting is taking place at the oath-taking venue inside the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
