Md Shamim Ahsan, assistant secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Barguna district unit, has been relieved of duties following his remarks regarding the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU).
The decision was announced in a press release, which stated that Shamim Ahsan has been relieved of all organisational responsibilities.
His wife, Uzufa, also confirmed the information to the Times of Bangladesh.
The party noted that his comments deeply hurt and angered current and former students of Dhaka University, as well as people from all walks of life.
It further said that such remarks had tarnished the image of Jamaat and were contrary to the party’s core policies and ideals. The release was signed by Maulana Muhibullah Harun, ameer of the district unit.
On 25 January, Shamim called Ducsu “a den of drugs and a brothel” during a public rally in Patharghata.
Dhaka University students staged a demonstration, burned an effigy of the Jamaat leader, and demanded an apology.
