Jamaat continues to demand PR system in elections, legal backing for July Charter

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami held an urgent meeting of its Executive Committee to discuss the current political landscape of the country.

The meeting took place on Monday at 11am in the Basundhara residential area of the capital, presided over by Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman.

During the meeting, the party reiterated its firm stance demanding the legal implementation of the July Charter and the conduct of the upcoming national parliamentary elections under the proportional representation (PR) system.

According to a press release issued by Mujibul Alam of Jamaat’s Central Publicity Department, all deputy leaders, the Secretary General, assistant secretaries general, and other members of the executive committee were present at the emergency meeting.

The committee engaged in a detailed discussion about the current political situation in the country. Party leaders emphasised the necessity of granting legal recognition to the July Charter to ensure that the upcoming parliamentary elections are free, fair, and credible.

Furthermore, the statement highlighted Jamaat’s unwavering demand for guaranteeing equal opportunities to all political parties ahead of the next national election and for the election to be conducted through the PR system.
