Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur has said he has not fallen victim to such a barbaric attack even during ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s regime.
He made the remarks while talking to journalists on his arrival in Dhaka on Saturday evening after receiving treatment in Singapore.
Nur has demanded proper investigation into the recent brutal attack on him at Bijoynagar in the capital and exemplary punishment of the attackers.
He also said the prospect of a free and fair election in Bangladesh will remain uncertain without justice.
“We’re cooperating with the government, but not beneficiaries of it. We aren’t partners in any power-sharing arrangement.
“Therefore, as a precondition for a fair election, I demand an investigation into the attack on me and punitive action against the attackers.”
Nur alleged that the assault was a “targeted operation” aimed at silencing him and sending a warning message to others.
“If justice is denied in this case, tomorrow those in powerful positions could also face disgrace. We want accountability, otherwise the cycle of violence will continue,” he warned.
Nearly 35 days have elapsed since the attack, yet the judicial inquiry is showing signs of negligence, he said.
He further warned that the country could plunge into a deeper crisis if the much-anticipated elections are not held properly.
“How can fair elections be ensured when a party leader is attacked in such a manner?” the Gono Odhikar Parishad chief alleged.
Nur was flown to Singapore for treatment in Mount Elizabeth Hospital after he suffered head injuries in the attack at Bijoynagar in Dhaka on 29 August.
