International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) will observe the 9th death anniversary of Professor M Alimullah Miyan, the pioneer of private university education in Bangladesh and its founding Vice-Chancellor, tomorrow, 10 May 2026. Professor Miyan, who passed away on 10 May 2017, played a pivotal role in shaping the higher education landscape of the country by establishing IUBAT, the first non-government university in Bangladesh, in January 1991.
Born on 15 February 1942 in Kailine Village, Chandina Upazila, Cumilla District, Professor Miyan came from a family of freedom fighters, with his late brother Bir Protik Colonel Shafiq Ullah being a prominent figure. Professor Miyan was instrumental in introducing private universities to Bangladesh, a sector that has since grown significantly.
His academic journey included a BCom (Honours) degree from the University of Dhaka, an MBA from Indiana University, USA, and a PhD from Manchester Business School, UK.
He was a respected faculty member and Director at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka, and also served as the Founder Chairman of the Centre for Population Management and Research (CPMR). Throughout his career, Professor Miyan made significant contributions as a teacher, researcher, and development expert.
In honour of his legacy, IUBAT will host several commemorative activities on campus tomorrow, including open discussions and reminiscence sessions about his life and work, a doa mahfil, and other events to celebrate his lasting impact on higher education in Bangladesh. His visionary leadership and contributions continue to inspire thousands of students across the country, said IUBAT officials.
