Harry Kane called England’s dramatic 2-1 comeback win over DR Congo one of his favourite moments in an England shirt after scoring both goals to send the Three Lions into the FIFA World Cup last 16.
England were on the verge of a shock exit after Brian Cipenga scored early for DR Congo. But Kane stepped up again with two second half goals to complete the comeback.
“It was a crazy game. To come back in the way we did is just extremely pleasing and makes me proud of the group, proud of the boys,” Kane said after the match.
“It was a tough game and, for myself personally, one of my favourites in an England shirt now. To get a couple of goals and help the team over the line is obviously a magical, magical feeling.”
Kane converted two of his three shots on target. He said he always tries to set the right example for his teammates.
“I try to be the best version of myself. Leading by example is one of my biggest traits and one of the biggest mottos I try to live by,” he said.
Anthony Gordon, who assisted both goals, said he was certain Kane would score the winner.
“As soon as he hit it, I knew it was going in. I was already celebrating,” Gordon said.
England coach Thomas Tuchel praised Kane for another match winning display.
“Harry is our captain. He’s our leader. He decides football matches with unbelievable finishes and did it here twice. The second one was just a brilliant goal,” Tuchel said.
Tuchel was also asked about the top forwards at the World Cup, including Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi.
“They’re all sharks. If they smell blood, they come and score,” he said.
